It is sad to know that depression is often not diagnosed properly or treated the way that it should be. One of the common reasons for this is the inability for the doctors to recognize the symptoms that are associated with it. Also most people are not able to recognize it in themselves. That is why it is important to know how to recognize the symptoms of depression.

When a doctor is able to recognize certain signs in their patient they will have a professional psychiatrist speak with them and possibly perform certain tests. The most common test that is used to diagnose depression is called the Beck Depression Inventory. This is used to help determine the severity of the depression, how long it lasts, and what causes it. In some people a toxicology report will show that they are in a depression that is drug induced.

More than 17 million Americans suffer from some type of depression and their lives are greatly affected by this. While we are able to perform certain tests to try to determine if someone is suffering depression these are not conclusive. There is nothing that we are able to use that will definitely answer this question for us.

If you believe that you or someone you know may be depressed and be suffering from many of the symptoms associated with it than you should make an appointment with the doctor. They will perform a physical examination to detect any underlying problems. There are certain medicines, diseases, and viruses that have been known to cause the symptoms of depression.

If the psychiatrists has diagnosed you as suffering from depression than they will be able to advise you on the best course of treatment. There are many support groups, medications, and therapies that you will be able to use to help you deal with the symptoms and also the root of the problem.

Clinical depression is a very real problem and one that must be addressed and treated quickly. There are many people who have this condition – but do not actually realize it. This is because they do not know how to spot the symptoms for it. We feel that it is just a reaction to something that happened and it will pass like they always do.

The difference between feeling sad and be clinically depressed is that these feeling that overtake you are much stronger than you have ever felt and will last for days or even weeks. This can be a reaction to a lost loved one, a traumatic event in our life, or even problems that we might have with our self esteem. These feelings will keep us from living our lives like we should.

When the symptoms of depression are not treated they will become worse and instead of affecting us for a few months it will last for years. Most people will begin to suffer health problems associated with depression and may even have thoughts of suicide. It is hard for people to identify these symptoms – but it is the first step to finding help.

Below are the most common symptoms of depression:

Difficulty concentrating and making any type of decision

Fatigue and lack of energy

A feeling of guilt and helplessness

Feelings of hopelessness

Insomnia or excessive sleeping

Irritability

No interest in participating in activities you once enjoyed

Appetite loss or over eating

Headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that are not responding to treatments

Anxious feelings

Thoughts of suicide.

Depression is an affliction that affects many people throughout the world. One of the characteristics of true clinical depression is the withdrawal of the depressive and their isolation from others. Support groups can break this isolation and draw them back into society by encouraging them to discuss their problems and get some relief from their depression, or other ailments.

There are several ways that people form support groups. They can be groups of friends, who all go out together. This starts quite early, often in childhood and school. These friends can stick together throughout life and be a wonderful support for each other.

Other support groups can be formed from groups of people getting to know each other at the work place. They often help each other at work and all go out together on various activities after work. Again these groups help each other work through problems that are often work related and sometimes even more.

Then there are special therapy groups like those formed in rehabilitation centers especially for alcohol and drug related problems. There are special ones for different diseases and even some for depressives. A trained professional, such as a therapist, moderates these. Because of their specialization they can often pinpoint the problems and be very helpful.

It is important to try to socialize, as support from all these groups is very helpful. Your problems are never as big when you share them. It is also easier to resolve them with help from others. Joining a support group will help you break the urge to withdraw into yourself that is part of the depressive syndrome.

You can find professional support groups in your local yellow pages or through hospitals and doctors. Sometimes there are even support groups associated with your work place. It is good to seek them out and get help from these valuable resources.

Always remember you are not alone and help is available. Depression is a terrible thing that can develop into serious mental health problems. It can also be hiding some serious problems. With these facts in mind it is wise to seek help for depression early, so that you can get relief and stop it from getting worse. Support groups as you can see can be very helpful in treating depression.

So do not procrastinate try to seek help as soon as you can for a depression that is not going away after a couple of days.
